#23:  A song you cannot stand to listen to”

I refuse to be obvious about this prompt.

I could easily choose that mid-western wedding staple, the infamous Chicken Dance.

Or jump on the Macarena or Gangum Style bandwagon.

But the truth is, for me, there are singers and bands that are wildly popular that I just do not get.  I am not talking about Gangster rap  (tho I enjoy a little NWA or Tupac)or sad sack country (but Waylon can be pretty cool), which are styles I dislike. I’m also not talking about The Beibs or boy bands or young girl pop stars. I’m old, they re not on my radar to tell the truth.

I am talking about contemporary bands/groups that people love, that sell out concerts, that appear on TV shows and are touted as the next big thing and sometimes are (much to my astonishment!)  That the local radio stations I listen to play and play. A couple examples are James Blunt, David Grey, the band Dawes. I find them unlistenable and yet they have a  huge fan bases.  I am not, by any means, dissing anyone who likes these musicians, and the music I choose today. Thank god for all types and tastes in music.  I just dislike it, I will immediately change the channel if I can. I won’t go to their concerts.  It’s just me, not you….

Often  it’s about the tone of their voices. Sometimes it’s the treacly lyrics of their songs. Whatever,  it doesn’t matter. Different strokes for different folks, right? I am quite sure a number of my choices during this series have had people scratching their heads, and even more in my real life.

So that being said here is a song from a group that, as I said, I just don’t get.  Their popularity is a mystery to me, and I have friends who adamantly disagree. I chose the first live performance I found, checked to make sure it played, and turned it OFF….

  1. I absolutely hate kanye west song, bound 2, it is so stupid. Actually I dislike most of his stuff, with the exception of his song stronger.

  2. Haven’t heard that group or song before. The singing was quite ham-handed and overly deliberate. Stop taking yourself so seriously, banjo guy!
I agree that James Blunt is hard to tolerate. Such a whiny voice.
Plain White T’s also aggravate me. Their simpering song about Delilah is the worst.

    • My first thought was o go listen to Plain White T’s….
LOL, I’m just gonna take your word for it.
My beef with the Avett’s is that they sing completely of-key, tone deaf they are.

I’m reading via email on my phone so I can’t see your video, but I’m really curious who you chose!

Can’t believe you don’t like David Grey. Very interesting… I tend to go for lyrics first, and he writes beautifully (love his “Shine”), but I respect if you don’t like his tone.

I’ll have to think on this one. I’m not a big Gaga fan or Robyn Thicke…I’d probably pick that Blurred Lines song. Roar by Katy Perry would be another. Most pop music these days. (Gah I feel old saying that.)

    • I love you Christy…

i’m saying that because i think we will disagree about the song i chose when you do see it…
but i totally agree with most pop music these days…there are so many bad song choices, too little time~

Oh dear me. Seems we’ve reached an impasse.

        Oh dear. Oh dear.

I love the Avetts. I more than love them.

        But.

I love you too. I mean, I and love and you, too.

        Oh dear.

  4. I know Christy..
    I know.
But it’s like I said….it’s nothing even personal about them. There is something about the voices that I can’t listen to. I have read some quotes from songs you have written and liked the quotes, but the sound…it’s the sound.
It’s my ears, there is something seriously wrong with my ears. Let’s leave it at that!

    🙂

    • Tee! Hee! I read this last week and WAITED for Christy to respond cuz I know how she feels about the Avett Brothers. It’d be boring if we agreed all the time, right?
The one song missing in this series should be, “Guilty Pleasure Song”…like the horrible pop song everyone says that they hate but secretly listens to and sings along…Um yeah, Back Street Boys have graced these ears before. Don’t judge 🙂

  5. Never heard them before. The banjo guy looks as if he’s about to preach. A bit sober-sided I think. But I didn’t listen the whole way. 😉 x
